The farewell to the first nine holes is as testing as any of them. A ball can run into rough or trees on either side of the tight fairway, making a 3-wood or 1-iron the smart play to a plateau 250 yards downrange. This sets up the best possible short-iron approach, which often can be from a tilted lie to a green that strongly slants forward, toward a creek running in front and right of it. "You'll feel a lot better with the putter in your hand if you keep the approach below the hole," Nicklaus said.
